Jan Gustafson, Artist

I am both a fine artist and educator.  I have illustrated two books, worked in the field of architectural rendering, designed gardens, clothing, jewelry, and furniture.  For me life is about hands on creating.  I love to watch an idea, even the fraction of an idea, turn into something tangible.  Opportunities in my life have allowed me to nurture and  manicure many of my skills.    Travel, exploring different cultures through the media of drawing, painting, and photography, is perhaps one of the highlights.  Assisting others in discovering their inner artist is a wonderful high.

As a fine artist I work in pen and ink, watercolor and acrylic, and often enhance my watercolors using colored pencil.  I love color and look for it in the world around me.  My work is an interaction between nature and my artistic eye. I lose myself in the sensuous quality of the landscape, see it as a living, breathing, and ever changing form that delights.  Throughout the years, because of my art, I have come to see even the most mundane view as hiding great treasures.  The whole process of learning to see beyond the obvious is a great gift.

My sculptures grew out of a paper mache project I did with my third grade students. I bring these fanciful three dimensional creatures alive by infusing them with movement. Whether ugly or cute, they have their own character, much as the animals that share my own life.

As an educator I have worked with both children and adults. Moving from adult education to younger and younger school age children, I realized that I could teach the same skills and arrive at wonderful products merely by breaking down the projects into more understandable steps. Despite a diverse repertoire, I have always emphasized the creative and unusual approach to completing any assignment.  With retirement from the BV School District I work mainly with adults in the studio and on location, with travel to places I love.  The friendships I have developed in sharing my skills with others has made retirement rich and full.
